The Calling
Joan of Arc reaches toward the viewer from a shadowed garden while translucent figures, branches, and fragments of armor gather around her.
Joan stands at the human center of a dense garden, her face lifted and one hand extended toward the viewer. Pale spectral figures fill both sides of the composition, their armor, fabric, branches, and warm outlines partly dissolving into the trees and stone behind them. The viewpoint sits within that apparition rather than outside it. The Calling turns the viewer into part of the presence surrounding Joan at the moment she reaches toward the voices calling her forward.

The Calling is an original Second View composition developed in dialogue with Jules Bastien-Lepage’s Joan of Arc (1879). Bastien-Lepage places the apparitions around Joan at the edge of the garden; this work moves the viewpoint into that spectral presence and looks back toward her outstretched hand.
